S. Donald Sussman, founder of Paloma Partners in 1981, calls himself the "chief opportunistic officer." Focusing solely on market neutral strategies, his role is figuring out where the opportunities are. Once. those opportunities are identified, he will then find the people who can execute the appropriate strategy.

Sussman, 54, has been farming out allocations to managers since 1981. These are usually exclusive relationships where Paloma is the sole backer of the manager.
